looks like a SansAmp or whatever they are guitar or bass pedal...

it is a sans amp, i was being a goof. ben is building a website and i had this joke that you should advertise like this "welcome to spider studios! we now offer sans amp"
only pedal nerds would find humor in that.

no that would be their amps
jim used the sans amp while tracking just to give a little more meat behind his tone.

Jim needs no more meat.

On a serious note, yes, most bassists mic their cabs and also run a track of SansAmp or similar direct to board to beef up their tone, although, like I said, I think Jim is a-ok in the meat department.
