View Full Version : "Secrets of The Dead" or "Destroy and Dominate"?
Which new track do you prefer?
This should be interesting as they are both shit hot.

The disappearing sun.
That intro was the one I was looking most foward to, and when I heard the bridge, WOAH. I want to hear that song full. Potential favourite off the record
But to answer the real question... Destroy. Had me straight away, Secrets i'm still getting used to. Needs more appreciation from me

D+D kicked me in the balls straight away.
Being an avid lover of 'the riff' i can't stop listening to the song!

both extremely awesome, but D&D is so much easier to get into, if that makes sense...

I'm a little surprised to have heard 2 songs and no crazy guitar solos or anything. I like both songs, but really hope that they aren't 2 of the tracks I'm going to like the most.
I like D&D a little better at the moment. Probably because I tabbed SoTD so I've heard it billions of times.

Eh, I don't know. D+D is heavier and groovier, but there is something about it thats hard for me to get into. It might be the weird chorus. I really like Secrets, though.

D&D.
I love the geetars.
I'm not into over analysing the music too much to decide whether I like it or not. It's usually pretty simple and I think some people are being overly critical in some circumstances because it either rocks, or it doesnt and I think Chimaira have made it awfully easy for us in the liking stakes.
To quote that metalsucks.net article: "if these two songs don’t make you foam at the mouth to hear the other eight… seek medical help."
Oh and for what it's worth, I picked Secrets. lol

I haven't heard Disappearing. But of the 2 full songs I have heard I would say Secrets.

Destory and Dominate. I loved it from the first listen, where as Secrets took me a while to warm to it. I could see D & D being entrance music for a wrestling bad guy. The lyrics fit, and the music has this slow, methodical feel to it.

At first listen, I definitely preferred Destroy... but when I'm at work, the riff that always gets stuck in my head is the verse riff for Secrets. So I'm leaning to Secrets due to it being catchier.

OK, I listened to BWOMP's cover and I am gonna say I like Secrets more. I like them both but I love Secret's riffs.

The "take control of my every thing...killing them systematically" part sticks in my head sooooo fucking bad. I don't know what it is! I think a lot of its due to the way Mark says it, with that low badass growl voice =P
Ack don't base your opinion on my cover, just click on the video I responded to and listen to the actual song.

Well, my original post stands but having heard a pro quality version of DD I will say damn that fucking awesome. This album is gonna be fucking awesome from front to back and top to bottom.
Is it just me or does anyone else get a Rambo vibe from Destroy and Dominate?
"War is in my blood"
"Rage is in my heart"
"No home"
"No family"
"But you pushed"
"You pushed me"
"You pushed me"
"I'll crush you all"
"Day by day, destroy and dominate"
"Rejected by society"
"The same one that created me"
Just to name some lines, that is fucking Rambo to the TEE!
And maybe it's just me but I get a Terminator: Salvation from Secrets of The Dead... watch the trailer and then listen...
either way after hearing some of those samples and the Destroy, fuck man! I AM FUCKING STOKED FOR THIS ALBUM!!!

I'd prefer reference to one of the original two movies :icon4: No amount of Bale and new-age CG, wannabe-transformers, "forget the past" nonsense can save that franchise, IMHO :askance:
But then, I don't think either of the first two movies would use anything but their original score, except for music being played in the movie (ala, GnR's song in T2), so perhaps you're right that this movie WOULD. But the song would assuredly be better than the flick  (for me, anyway)

LOL, damn, great minds think alike hahaha. See, miss a few days working and there you go. Well I am glad I am not the only one. That was the first thing that popped into my head when I heard the lyrics
Hehe it's cool. It wasnt me who brought it up though. Check for yourself in said thread. lol

LOL, yeah I went and found it. But come one, so true, it's like Rambo's anthem. Instead of that lame music that always ends a Rambo movie they should end it with Destroy and Dominate!
After listening to it for a while now constantly, i wish D&D had a little more layers to it then intro riff chorus riff chorus outro. I still like the song a lot, sounds insane in the car. The outro for secrets of the dead is just bliss. i picked dd for this one.

Since having secrets on the ipod I've been listening it to more than destroy haha.. Now I don't know what one I like more :/ I'll call them even stevens for now.
And on the 1st april I'm not going to listen to them till the album arrives (well atleast not very often, don't think I could quite manage that..) What happened to be with ressurection/worthless, I played them so much that when the album dropped I just felt meh about them compared to the other songs. Listening to them now though, and fuccck, loving the speed of them!!

For me, they both took a number of listens, I think just to go from the slightly thrashier edge of Resurrection to the more majorly groovin' vibe of The Infection. But now that I've had my numerous listens, I love them both for sure! I think that the groove of "D&D" was perhaps easier to get a feel for immediately, but after several listens, I probly have to give a very slight (if at all) edge of favoritism to "Secrets". But that could perhaps just be due to the fact I've heard that one more than the other. Can't wait to hear all the rest, that's for sure!
But one thing is, I'm still DYING for some solos from Mr. Rob F. Arnold!! Can't wait! :Metal4:
PS: GREAT job so far enhancing great vibes from Spicuzza!! :sorcerer:
PPS: And (obviously) endless props to Andols for never ceasing to surprise and amaze me with that crazy and so creative drumwork! LOVE the insane little dbl-bass blasts sprinkled throughout the chorus of "D&D"!

I've just always loved his double-bass changeups (as well as, oviously, the rest of his fantastic work). So fun, so cool. :icon10:
I agree, his double bass work in D&D is creative imo. You think you've caught on, then he does something completely different but it still fits and sounds amazing.
Also I'm trying to tab it out like I did for SoTD and I'm finding the harmonies are really weird lol. I'm having to listen super close a few times through and still end up scratching my head sometimes.

Totally! While being so creative, he always maintains such structure and organization, and his changeups aren't just random like some other "impressive" drummers out there. Even in his more complex beats, it's always logical and well laid out, and fits JUST RIGHT for the song in question, as if no other beat would be quite so fitting. Gotta love Andols! (as well as the others for their writing input with beats as well, of course)
I think it's pretty funny that people say they found D&D easier to get into and that it grooves better because it goes against the grain in regards to a standard groove which can throw people right off.
I am meaning in particular, the bar of 7 (or 3 however you want to subdivide it) that is in the main riff/chorus.
Most western music has a straight pulse with 4 beats in the bar. But the odd number in that riff tail makes it way more interesting but like I say, it's not a normal occurrence in western music. Or at least popular western music, largely because people can't dance to it. LOL
And anyone who hasnt been impressed with Andols work yet needs to listen harder! His feet have always been astrounding, but damn he has knocked it up a good few levels this time round!!

I don't think the average listener was focusing so much on the time sigs and stuff, Octo. And I dunno too many people who are lookin' for that good Chimaira song they can dance to  But you're right, if you're paying attention to the timing, it could throw the "average" western groove off, but I think the "easy groove to get into" in "D&D" just rests in the feel of the riffs n such. Least for me.

No, that was part of the point I was making. The average listener more often than not won't even know what a time signature even is.
And to be fair, I did state that odd time signatures were not frequent in popular western music because people can't dance to it and never implied that people would want to dance to Chimaira as such, lol although I have seen that happen at rock clubs. heh
I think it is fair to say without being snotty about it, that your average metal fan is more accustomed to hearing things that are not part of the standard western pop formulae, but regardless, I still find it interesting that people have taken to D&D with it's odd timing more than Secrets with it's straight pulse running through it.

Quite. Yeah, I hear that. I admit, I never thought of it myself but after listening to Floods again, the outro does show some similarities without being a blatant rip off.
Interesting comparison.

After listening to D&D so much, I might say D&D is my fav, well at least for the moment. That is until I hear something newer and that takes my attention...
the vocals on secrets of the dead remind me of the old dead inside and forced life demo's, so abrasive and so beautiful.
D&D for me! It just exudes a BEATDOWN!

Oh, and I voted D&D, as after 5,000,000 listens already, it still smashes me in the face with heavyness.
Secrets is great, but this one is my fave full song I've heard. I'm really looking forward to the album in general from the Amazon clips, especially Coming Alive, Impending Doom, and of course The Heart of it All.
The thing I personally find particularly interesting about this poll, is the fact that many many people complained about SOTD being too slow and that they always prefered the faster stuff by Chimaira.
Then comes along D&D and BANG! Instant hit, even though D&D is slower.
In fact, SOTD runs at 160 bpm.
D&D runs 30 bpm slower at 130bpm.
Hehe.
ShadowStalker47

D&D doesnt sound slower. Am I the only one who thinks that? Not gonna argue that technically it is, but listening to both songs, D&D sounds faster than Secrets Of The Dead.
