View Full Version : new forum suggestion
I have an idea for a new forum that I would like to see set up if possible.
I've been on other forums where they have a debate sub-forum. One was called "the fight club" and it was anything goes. No holds barred. Another is simply politics and current events and there is no personal attacks allowed. I'd like to see something similar implemented here. I know other members enjoy a good debate/arguement every once in a while and think it would bring more traffic.
Often debates get shut down here even if there aren't any personal attacks being flung at each other. I just think it would be nice to be able to express our opinions on a certain subject and not have to worry about ruining someone's thread if it gets off-topic. It wouldn't have to be anything goes, but a little corner of the board dedicated to debating certain issues would be a fun way to blow off some steam.
What do you think?

Well a few years back, when LQDMTL ran the board, he made "The Blast Furnace" forum, which wasn't far off an "anything goes" forum. It basically encouraged people to insult and attack each other, but not to get too personal. It ended up being a disaster. I think it might have worked better, had he made someone else moderate it, and not that YoYos douche.
;)
That said, I think a simple debate forum could be a good idea, as long as the "no personal attacks" rule is strongly enforced. I think the majority of current board members can argue their point without resorting to petty personal attacks.
Maybe we could call this debate forum "The Octo Zone". :P

All it would take is one throwaway comment like this to spoil the whole thing though.....
I like the idea on the principal but I'm not sure if we really need it and I sincerely doubt that it would act as a draw for new members and even if it did attract new members, they would be the wrong kind of people we want on the board because they would be joining the boards for the wrong reasons.
These are Chimaira forums, not debate forums.
If enough people chime in and think it's a good idea, then we will seriously consider implementing it.
Till then...

I don't think that one comment should seal the fate of the entire forum. Maybe a temporary ban for offenders? I don't know if you guys can dole out 5, 10, 15, or 30 day bans like on some other forums I belong to, but that might be an option if someone steps out of line. Maybe a ban from the forum where the incident occurred? An offender should be punished/straightened out, I'm not arguing that, but punishing the people who use it within the rules just doesn't sit well with me.
I may have worded the traffic bump thing wrong. What I meant was that more of the regular members may visit/post more if there is a topic they feel passionately about being discussed. It may draw a new member or two, but Chimaira will be what brought them here and ultimately will be what keeps them here. I just think more activity will attract more people as opposed to a forum with less activity.
As far as this being a Chimaira forum and not a debate forum, I agree. But the same could be said about the movie and video game forums. It's just an extra place to talk about things other than Chimaira. I'm a member of a board that has a general overall topic of baseball with many sub-forums regarding baseball. They don't allow ANY talk about anything other than baseball. I love baseball, but being able to talk about only baseball gets a little old. I visit semi-often, but rarely do I post. It's not much fun when you're pigeonholed to a specific topic.
I know there are forums for discussing several topics other than Chimaira, but I don't play video games and I'm not a big movie buff, so I don't get much, if any, use out of those forums. The music forum I visit occasionally, but I don't post much because I like a lot of different genres and since this is a metal band's board, we're mostly metalheads who don't give a shit about most music that isn't metal.
I don't know, I just thought I would throw the suggestion out there after seeing the posts about guns in the other thread.
I'm willing to give it a go on a trial basis and there will be some rules.
If the rules get continually broken then it will be the same as the Cream Pants thread.
Thank you, Octo. I appreciate it.

Eh, I thought the "General" board was good enough for bringing up general topics. Peaceful debate happens in most ANY thread already, so I don't know that a "Debate Board" is very necessary. But we'll see how it goes.

^ I tend to agree - people are free to post pretty much anything as long as it doesn't contravene the pretty basic rules of no personal attacks, racism, bigotry etc etc. I don't see what having this subsection changes, but as Octo said, we'll see how it goes.
